About This Book

»Normand Renaud, prĂ©facier et collaborateur Ă  La ville invisible / Site unseen.----Visual and verbal artistry combine in «La ville invisible/Site unseen», which showcases Sudbury-themed photographs by Mariana Lafrance, selected from her popular photo-blog The Little Smoke. On a daily basis over 18 months, Mariana uploaded a striking new scene she had discovered in the alleyways and lanes, the empty or undeveloped spaces of downtown Sudbury and its nearby neighbourhoods. For the first time, a unique aspect of our city visual personality is presented in a book whose intent is artistic instead of historical or touristic. These pictures are accompanied by the writings of a dozen established writers and personalities associated with the city's literary community. They rose brilliantly to the challenge of putting their thoughts and words to these little gems by providing texts in French and (in most cases) in English as well. The contributors are Michel Dallaire, Robert Dickson, CĂ©leste DubĂ©, Simon Laflamme, Daniel Landry, Myriam Legault, Melchior Mbonimpa, Christian Pelletier, Normand Renaud, Éric Robitaille, Manon St-Jules, Guylaine Tousignant and denise truax. In a city that mining made great, Mariana Lafrance prospects for textures and colours made true by time and place. In downtown Sudbury's lanes and alleyways, in its empty spaces and neglected places, her camera captures fortuitous yet stunning compositions to which most of us would have been blind. Her ability to sense spirit in structure is uncanny. Her eye for authenticity is unfaltering. Though there are practically no people in to be seen in the whole collection, these places are alive with presence. Normand Renaud, author of the preface and contributor to «La ville invisible/Site unseen».
