Méconnu de notre histoire, l'abbé Maurice Proulx (1902-1988) est un des pionniers du septième art québécois. Prêtre, agronome, travailleur social et cinéaste autodidacte, il se lance dans l'aventure du cinéma dès le début des années 1930. Homme passionné et carriériste, élève et proche collaborateur du premier ministre libéral Adélard Godbout, il devient, dans les années 1940 et 1950, cinéaste officiel du gouvernement unioniste de Maurice Duplessis. Vitrine publicitaire des réalisations du chef, son cinéma jette pourtant un regard engagé, mais franc sur la société agricole et rurale québécoise de l'après-guerre.Patrimoine national depuis 1977, l'oeuvre cinématographique unique de Maurice Proulx demeure l'une des seules fenêtres visuelles et sonores aujourd'hui disponibles sur le Québec d'autrefois. Dans la caméra de l'abbé Proulx permet de mieux comprendre cette société un peu trop «noircie» par la mémoire.Marc-André Robert est candidat au doctorat en histoire à l'Université Laval. Spécialiste de l'histoire du cinéma gouvernemental au Québec et des rapports entre le cinéma et la politique en Occident, il s'intéresse également au cinéma underground et marginal, de même qu'aux films de famille. La thèse qu'il prépare porte sur l'Office du film du Québec et sur l'utilisation politique du cinéma par l'État québécois entre 1961 et 1983.
