13 Sur la route

On the road

In this unit you will learn how to:
• talk about French roads and driving in France.
• communicate at a service station.
• use the pronouns y and en.
CEFR: Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst traveling (B1); Can understand the main point of radio programs (B1); Can comprehend straight factual texts (B1); Can understand short official documents (B1); Can make his or her opinions and reactions understood (B1).

On the road

Roulez à droite! or Conduisez à droite! (Drive on the right!), Serrez à droite! (Keep to the right!), these are the imperative reminders that British motorists cannot avoid noticing as they drive into France. N’oubliez pas de roulez à droite! (Don’t forget to drive on the right!)
You must also be aware of priorité à droite (priority to the right). Cars have to let vehicles coming from the right go first. This does not apply on une route prioritaire (a main road). However in small towns, street intersections often have priorité à droite. You may notice signs saying Vous n’avez pas la priorité (you do not have priority). Many accidents de la route (road accidents) are due to this particular rule being ignored.
L’éthylotest (the breathaliser) est obligatoire (is compulsory) depuis le 1er juillet 2012. Drivers must have breathalising equipment in their cars at all times. Depuis le 1er novembre, failure to show a breathaliser can result in une amende (a fine) de 11€.
