Greetings and farewells
You have probably heard the expressions γεια σου! (yásu) hi (informal way of addressing people you know) and γεια σας! (yásas) hello (formal way, for people you don’t know, or for addressing more than one person). They are both expressions used every day by young and old alike. The word γεια (ya) comes from υγεία (ighía) health and the expression actually means health to you! There are three other meanings of this expression: goodbye – when leaving, bless you – when sneezing and cheers! – when drinking.
Although γεια σου, γεια σας or simply γεια (yásu-yásas-ya) can be used throughout the day, Greeks use other greetings and farewells too, such as καλημέρα (kaliméra) good morning, καλό μεσημέρι (kaló mesiméri) have a nice siesta! καλό απόγευμα (kaló apóghevma) have a nice afternoon, καλησπέρα (kalispéra) good evening, καλό βράδυ (kaló vráTHi) have a nice evening and καληνύχτα (kaliníhta) good night. Καλημέρα stands for both good morning and good day in English.
