Hungary and the Hungarians

Names

In Hungary surnames come first, followed by first names, e.g. Nagy Istvån, Kovåcs Erzsébet. However, foreign names keep their original sequence, e.g. Robert Stuart.
The English title Mr is Ășr in Hungarian and it follows the person’s surname, e.g. Nagy Ășr. However, it is not as frequently used as in English. It is perfectly polite to refer to someone as Nagy IstvĂĄn. Mrs is -nĂ© in Hungarian, and it is joined to the husband’s surname or full name. Nagy IstvĂĄn’s wife is therefore NagynĂ© or Nagy IstvĂĄnnĂ©. The Hungarian word for Miss sounds old-fashioned and is rarely used. There is no equivalent for Ms.
If you know someone you address them by their first name in both formal and informal situations. Elderly women are called nĂ©ni and elderly men are addressed as bĂĄcsi. (Though these words literally mean aunt and uncle, they are widely used outside the family.) They can also be used with the person’s surname or first name, e.g. an elderly man called Kis Lajos can be addressed as Kis bĂĄcsi or Lajos bĂĄcsi and his wife, called Kati as Kis nĂ©ni or Kati nĂ©ni. NĂ©ni and bĂĄcsi are also used by children when talking to adults.

You: ön, önök, maga, maguk, te and ti

These all mean you in English. In official situations, ön is used when talking to one person (i.e. it is the singular form) and önök when talking to more than one person (i.e. it is the plural form), e.g. at passport control, at the hotel reception, when changing money, etc. These forms are often used in advertisements, instruction leaflets and when addressing clients in business life.
Maga (sing.) and maguk (pl.) are formal. They are used by adults...
