Social media marketing
‘It takes 20 years to build a reputation, and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.’
It’s seems obvious that this quote from billionaire investing legend Warren Buffet would apply to every aspect of your business (and your personal!) life – what you do and are seen to being doing have consequences and repercussions. But in the online world, these ripples are instantaneous and can reach from one side of the world to the other – in a matter of seconds and are archived, copied, retrieved and distributed forever.
But as powerful a tool as social media is for being able to cause huge damage to a company, when used correctly it can really pay off in a massive way and today I’m going to explain how to achieve this. Not only that but I will show you how to connect with mobile users through social media.
Benefits of social media in the mobile marketing mix
When it comes to using social media, it’s important not to expect an immediate return on your investment and effort. It’s not as simple as spending money on ads and then checking how many sales you have made. Social media doesn’t work that way.
It is going to takes time for you to build your following, for people to get used to seeing your company name in their various feeds. It’s not something that happens overnight (unless you’re very lucky!).
So what are some of the benefits you can get from utilizing social media?
Building your brand
Social media is a powerful tool for brand building. It allows you to determine how you want to position your company to your target audience. It enables you to tell people about your business and highlight the people in it. Using social media effectively means you can describe and show the benefits of your products or services to your target audience. It only takes a small amount of effort and content to really make an impact.
Exposure
It’s said that for a customer or client to buy from you, they had to have been exposed to your marketing messages anywhere between six and twenty times. Social media allows you to generate a lot of repeat exposure.
Depending on how long your average sales cycle is, it’s possible to get in front of your potential customers, and clients, eyeballs tens if not dozens of times (maybe even more?) educating them on what your company can do for them.
If your products and services appeal to a wide number of different industries and you produce stellar content, who knows – it ends up being shared virally all over social media, doubling if not tripling (more?) your exposure.
Building relationships
Social media is all about building relationships, whether it’s with existing customers or prospective ones. People can follow you and you them. You can find out what they like, how they use your products, how your services improved their lives or business. It’s incredibly powerful. Here’s a simple example:
Let’s say you’re perusing one of your best clients’ Twitter feed on your phone and you notice they’re a Chelsea supporter by the number of times they comment about the club’s performance. How gobsmacked do you think they’d be if you sent them a Chelsea shirt signed by their favourite player as a birthday gift or just as a random ‘Customer Appreciation’ thank you? Do you think that would make them more or less inclined to do extra business with you … or refer your company to their business colleagues?
How many other companies out there do you think are cultivating their business relationships in that way? How often has that happened to you? Yeah, me too.
Happens all the time … Not …
Though to be fair I did get a nice paperweight from a realtor once.
With social media you have instant, in-depth access to your followers, customers and clients who then become members of your community. Through social media, you can find out what they like, and what they don’t. What they love and what drives them mad. Can you discover a gap in the market no-one is filling just from your followers’ frustrated Tweets?
This level of communication and research used to take a lot of time and co...
