WĂ€hrend der erste Teil des Bandes hauptsĂ€chlich die frĂŒhe Moderne und die Romantik zum Gegenstand hat, beziehen sich Teil II und III auf die SpĂ€tmoderne (den Modernismus), die Avantgarden und die Neoavantgarden. Im vierten und letzten Teil wird SubjektivitĂ€t in Musik, Malerei, Film und Design analysiert.In den meisten BeitrĂ€gen wird deutlich, dass der Spielraum, der dem Einzelsubjekt zur VerfĂŒgung steht, seit der SpĂ€tmoderne immer kleiner wird und dass die Emanzipationsversprechender Renaissance (etwa Montaignes oder Cervantes) nicht eingelöst wurden.
