The Most Dazzling Girl in Berlin

About this book

A fascinating historical novel about Hilde, an orphan who experiences Berlin on the cusp of World War II as she discovers her own voice and sexuality, ultimately finding a family when she gets a job at a gay cabaret, by award-winning author Kip Wilson.

On her eighteenth birthday, Hilde leaves her orphanage in 1930s Berlin, and heads out into the world to discover her place in it. But finding a job is hard, at least until she stumbles into Café Lila, a vibrant cabaret full of expressive customers. Rosa, one of the club's waitresses and performers, immediately takes Hilde under her wing. As the café denizens slowly embrace Hilde, and she embraces them in turn, she discovers her voice and her own blossoming feelings for Rosa.

But Berlin is in turmoil. Between the elections, protests in the streets, worsening antisemitism and anti-homosexual sentiment, and the beginning seeds of unrest in Café Lila itself, Hilde will have to decide what's best for her future . . . and what it means to love a place on the cusp of war.

In a city of dazzling lights and deepening shadows, Hilde must find the courage to claim her voice, her love, and her future.

All Emil says
is that he’ll make up his mind
about who will stay
soon
maybe even
this week
which could even be
tonight
but all this indecision feels
like the recent election
with no clear winner
with me hanging on
by my fingertips.
Meanwhile Lent and Easter are over
the runoff looms in a couple of weeks
and Berlin is ready to escape
to gluttony meaning
we are going to be busy.
Brigitte asked us to arrive
early on Friday
to get things ready for
a big night and
we hurry to get
there on time.
Partygoers spill
into the streets
Hausfrauen
skirts high, necklines low
veterans passing bottles in alleys
half-drunk already.
Inside Café Lila
Emil stands at the bar pointing
a thick finger at Brigitte and Ute.
You leave Lena to me.
Half the Berliners who vote
for the Nazis don’t even realize
what they stand for.
Brigitte clears
her throat, Emil turns
toward us.
Guten Abend, girls.
Just the two of you?
We nod.
We were just talking about
your friend Lena.
She’s not our friend. I can’t help
the words tumbling out of my mouth.
She could be, Kurt says, making
us all look his way in surprise.
Look, I asked around, Emil
says.
She’s bringing her pay home
to a kid sister and father.
A war veteran.
At least she has a
home and a family.
Maybe you should give
her more of a chance.
Kurt crosses his arms.
Emil’s round shoulders hunch
forward
like he actually cares
about us accepting Lena
(a Nazi)
and it burns me
more than anything
that he wouldn’t
act the same way about me
especially when
her acceptance
equals
my exclusion.
FIZZLED
Lena doesn’t arrive
until Rosa and Ute are
ready to rehearse but
when she does, Kurt greets
her with extra heaps of
enthusiasm
in his voice
in his eyes
in his red, red cheeks.
Another point
for Lena
another point
against me.
She’s here, U...
