Introduction

1 User Experience with SAP and the Role of SAP Fiori Launchpad

This chapter introduces various components of a delightful user experience (UX) in an SAP landscape and explores the role of the SAP Fiori launchpad. It briefly describes SAP Fiori and its design principles, explains why SAP Fiori is the go-to UX for SAP solutions, and introduces the SAP Fiori launchpad and its components.
In this chapter, you’ll learn and explore the fundamentals about a rich and delightful UX via SAP Fiori, including its building blocks; various design values, principles, and best practices; the role of the SAP Fiori launchpad and its components; and new features in the SAP Fiori launchpad. We’ll compare SAP Fiori 2.0 and SAP Fiori 3 launchpad design and discuss how the SAP Fiori launchpad content is modeled. You’ll not only gain insights into the components and structuring of the SAP Fiori launchpad but also later understand the SAP Fiori launchpad content.

1.1 Introduction to the SAP User Experience

The SAP UX is a new track on SAP projects and implementations that is considered as equally important as other SAP modules, such as finance, controlling, procurement, and human resources. Simple tasks such as approving requests to complex tasks such as data analytics all require a great UX. It’s therefore important to discuss the value of a good UX. This context will upskill you to grasp the basics of SAP UX terminology. Let’s begin with understanding the term consumer-grade UX.
Today, two out of three people (i.e., 66% of the world’s population) own a mobile device, and there are about 5 billion mobile devices used across the globe as of 2021, according to GSMA Intelligence real-time data. Mobile phones have become ubiquitous and are required to perform a majority of tasks other than voice/video calls and messaging. For example, smartphones are used for navigation, purchasing items via e-commerce websites, tracking shipments, and so on. Mobile phones are used across all ages and locations and have become an important part of the lives of our younger generation.
With the increase in mobile phone usage, the new generation also demands an ease of access and a delightful experience to perform the tasks in the easiest way possible. For example, a toddler can make phone calls or play games, and even the older generations are adapting to mobile devices very quickly without much training.
The mobile applications and their UX have therefore acquired an industry standard “consumer grade” in contrast to “commercial grades” or “professional grades.” As the name suggests, consumer-grade UX involves applications that are developed while keeping consumers in mind; for example, developers might consider how easily a user would adapt to these applications without any (or little) technical support. This requires following some unified design or globally used standards, for example, logging in, searching, attaching do...
