Par delà le siècle et demi qui nous sépare de la génération des réformistes, j'ai eu l'impression de retrouver des incertitudes similaires face à l'avenir. Les uns comme les autres vivent les lendemains troubles de grandes espérances. Le temps des réformistes n'est ni celui des mythes fondateurs, ni celui des Grands Soirs. C'est un temps désenchanté, morose même; un temps de prudence, non d'élans prophétiques. En allant vers les réformistes, mon but n'était pas de réhabiliter des personnages « illustres » ou de dénicher un programme d'action pour l'avenir […]. J'ai plutôt voulu comprendre les questions qu'ils s'étaient posées et les réponses qu'ils avaient fournies, et voir comment, par la pensée et par l'action, ils avaient conjuré les angoisses d'un présent incertain. »
