Augustin Frigon, né en 1888, fait partie de la même génération que Lionel Groulx, Marie-Victorin, Édouard Montpetit et Léo Pariseau. Comme eux, il a participé puissamment au développement du Québec qu'on connaît aujourd'hui.Homme d'action, il a occupé tout un éventail de postes clés. De 1923 à 1935, il est notamment directeur de l'École Polytechnique de Montréal, et c'est sous sa gouvernance qu'elle laisse derrière elle l'image d'une école technique supérieure pour s'imposer comme une institution universitaire de sciences appliquées.En 1928, sa nomination à la commission Aird, chargée d'étudier les conditions de radiodiffusion au Canada, lui permet de s'affirmer comme un des principaux spécialistes dans le domaine. Quand la Société Radio-Canada est créée en 1936, Augustin Frigon est nommé directeur général adjoint et devient le véritable maître d'oeuvre du réseau français. Il est ensuite appelé, en septembre 1944, à remplacer le directeur général de CBC/Radio-Canada. Cet épisode de sa carrière illustre bien les écueils que peut rencontrer un Canadien français amené à tenir la barre d'une importante société publique canadienne, a fortiori quand son mandat est, entre autres, de promouvoir la culture spécifiquement Canadian au cours de la période tumultueuse de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.Cette première biographie d'Augustin Frigon vient enfin rendre justice à la carrière d'un homme à l'esprit audacieux, novateur, qui sut participer à l'avancement du Québec sur de nombreux fronts, dont l'éducation et les télécommunications, là où se jouait l'avenir de la nation.
