The Process

A New Foundation in Art, Design

About this book

The Process: A New Foundation in Art and Design is a compendium of 13 experimental projects designed to teach conceptual thinking and problem solving to art and design students.

The projects, created by Judith Wilde and Richard Wilde, focus on developing formal excellence and a strong sense of aesthetics, along with the ability to generate new ideas. Each project is illustrated with multiple visual solutions, provided to inspire creativity and illustrate that there can be multiple solutions to a single problem.

THOUGHTS ON THE CREATIVE PROCESS 2
During the design process one should remain sensitive to all that is given. In the case of formal problems, each stage of the project dictates its next incarnation. A design might call for the use of intense color, less complexity, the reproportioning of form, the introduction of balance or asymmetry, as well as a multitude of other aesthetic decisions.
TARGET PROBLEM:
A target is a recognizable, symmetrical graphic iconic image in popular culture. Its intent is for developing accuracy in weaponry, specifically for guns, bow and arrow, and the recreational activity of playing darts. Use the seven targets printed on the assignment sheet to make a personal, political, social or purely graphic statement.
AIM:
The concentric circles serve as a starting point in creating either recognizable imagery or patterns, executed spontaneously or carefully mannered. As in most of the assignments appearing in this book, the underlying intent is for one to have the opportunity to find one’s own voice for personal expression. This project, given its parameters, sets the stage for invention.
SUGGESTIONS:
Given the wide range of directions one can take in solving this problem, it is helpful at the onset to determine a course of action. Doodling, which can very well lead to a direction, can be a way to begin one’s investigation in setting the stage for original imagery to appear.
SPECIFICATIONS:
Either address all seven areas as individual explorations, or try to combine the seven areas into one cohesive statement. There are no limitations on color or medium.
TARGET SOLUTIONS:
In figure 1 all seven targets that appear on the assignment sheet are transformed into a mosaic of graphic patterning that creates a world unto itself.
Figures 2 through 17 have transformed the targets into decorative motifs with a focus on color, patterning, line, texture, and movement. For some, the target configurations have been obliterated, while others have maintained their integrity.
TARGET SOLUTIONS:
Both figures 1 and 3 use the dictates of the targets to create a composition by freely incorporating artistic license as a way of adaptation. The challenge to expand one’s visual problem-solving capabilities has been undertaken within the given constraints.
Figure 2 addresses the subject of hunting by incorporating a rabbit’s face into a target, while both the target and rabbit maintain their integrity.
TARGET SOLUTIONS:
Figure 1 juxtaposes playfully frolicking rabbits against a background of targets, giving rise to both the joy of life and the threat of death. This solution ...
