09.1.1 Rules + Detailing: Non-lining numerals
Non-lining numerals or old-style figures are traditionally used within body text. Illustrated in figure 01 is some sample text set with lining numerals; the numbers tend to jump out of the text as though they were set in capitals. Figure 02 shows the same text set with non-lining numerals (old-style figures). In this example the numbers follow the same rhythm as the body text and work far more harmoniously.
The elegant details of non-lining numerals are often lost when used within body copy. However, when used as headline, the true beauty is revealed.
Illustration 03 shows the relationship between non-lining numerals and upper and lower case letters and how comfortably they work together.
