Jede Theorie über das räumliche Sehen hat sich mit der Tatsache auseinander zu setzen, dass die durch die Netzhaut empfangene zweidimensionale Anordnung der optischen Eindrücke in bestimmter Weise verändert wird. Da bei der optischen Abbildung der dreidimensionale Raum auf eine gekrümmte zweidimensionale Fläche projiziert wird, soll diese Dimensionsreduktion als Transformation bezeichnet werden. Die visuelle Verarbeitung im Nervensystem die zu einer dreidimensionalen Räumlichkeit führt, entspricht dann einer Rücktransformation. Welche Parameter führen dann zu der wahrgenommenen Größe. Wie beeinflusst die Abstandsinformation über ein physikalisches Objekt im Außenraum, die visuelle Wahrnehmungsgröße.
