Em função disso iniciou-se o cultivo e o uso das plantas medicinais, in natura, em forma de chás, como alternativa de viabilizar acesso aos medicamentos naturais a grupos privados de liberdade, em função da carência de fármaco sintéticos, disponíveis no mercado convencional. O trabalho foi desenvolvido visando não só a melhoria da saúde física dos detentos, mas também da saúde mental, uma vez que o trabalho laboral voltado para o cultivo agrícola, notadamente tem contribuído para a ressocialização dos detentos da unidade prisional de Bom Jesus, Estado do Piauí. A Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de Bom Jesus copiou a ideia do uso das plantas medicinais no modelo antigo da Penitenciária Regional de Bom Jesus, a produção das plantas pelos detentos é levada para a Farmácia Básica Municipal, favorecendo a população bonjesuense.
