Demetrios Kydones, Staatsmann in leitender Position unter zwei Kaisern des spĂ€ten Byzanz (14. Jh.), hinterließ ein vielfĂ€ltiges literarisches Werk in der altgriechischen Literatensprache der Byzantiner, darunter Reden politischen Inhalts sowie theologische und philosophische Traktate. Besonders hervorzuheben sind seine Übersetzungen lateinischer theologischer Werke, darunter die Summen des Thomas von Aquin, und zahlreiche (ca. 450) Privatbriefe zu einer weiten Palette von Themen, die erstmals 1956/60 von R.-J. Loenertz vollstĂ€ndig ediert wurden. Franz Tinnefeld hat dieses Briefcorpus in den Jahren 1981 bis 2003 ins Deutsche ĂŒbertragen und mit einem ausfĂŒhrlichen Kommentar versehen. Auf der Basis dieser Übersetzung legt er nun eine nach Themen gegliederte literarische Analyse der Briefe vor, deren biographischer Hintergrund, soweit zum VerstĂ€ndnis notwendig, jeweils erlĂ€utert wird. Der Band wird ergĂ€nzt durch eine Zeittafel zur Biographie des Kydones, die deutsche Übersetzung seiner biographisch besonders wichtigen Rede an Kaiser Johannes V. und ausfĂŒhrliche Indices (Briefliste, Personen, Orte und Sachen).
