A major focus of mechanical process engineering lies on handling particles. Particularly, this includes the process of transport, mixing, separation and filtration of particles. A multi-scale simulation approach requires detailed particle modelling down to the micro scale. Hence an immersed boundary method was chosen to embed volumetrically resolved particles of arbitrary shape into the computational domain.ABSFoam, a modular and expandable tool for OpenFOAM was developed. A number of test cases show the versatile applicability of ABSFoam, and the ability to provide valid results is also demonstrated.
