Este libro desarrolla un punto de vista diferente sobre la forma de concebir las dificultades de aprendizaje en la educación escolar. La corriente más generalizada y consolidada considera que las dificultados de aprendizaje son un conjunto de trastornos individuales e internos del alumno que provocan unos problemas significativos en la adquisición y uso de las habilidades como, entre otras, el habla, la lectura, la escritura, o la comprensión oral. En cambio, esta obra considera que también pueden aparecer en el aula otras dificultades del aprendizaje de los contenidos curriculares originadas por el despliegue del currículum escolar, como por ejemplo atribuibles a la naturaleza de los contenidos curriculares, o a unas formas de enseñar que no promueven el desarrollo de las competencias básicas. El libro articula una visión completa de cómo se pueden identificar estas dificultados del aprendizaje en cuatro áreas curriculares: matemáticas, lengua, ciencias naturales y ciencias sociales, y aporta un conjunto de orientaciones didácticas de cómo abordarlas, que pueden ser de utilidad para la práctica profesional de maestros, profesores y asesores psicoeducativos.
