About This Book

La biología molecular estudia la composición, estructura y función de las moléculas importantes para la vida. Entre estas moléculas destaca el ADN por ser el material hereditario que codifica la información necesaria para el correcto funcionamiento de los seres vivos. En su corta historia, la biología molecular ha experimentado dos momentos que han supuesto impulsos importantes para su desarrollo. El primero, en 1953, fue el descubrimiento de la estructura del ADN. El segundo, en 1990, el inicio del Proyecto Genoma Humano, que estimuló el desarrollo de las técnicas y herramientas necesarias para la consecución de la secuencia de genomas completos y su posterior análisis. Aunque en 2001 se publicó el genoma humano, la carrera continúa con nuevos retos que sólo se conseguirán aunando esfuerzos de diversas disciplinas entre las que destaca por su importancia la bioinformática.
