About this book

Studies in the Spiritualization of Temple Theology in Psalms 29; 48; 68; 74; 84 and 114]In this study six selected psalms will be analyzed in a theological-historical context. The leading question is, »What is the role of the temple?« More specifically, »What is the relationship between the temple and the presence of God?« On the basis of literary critical (literarkritischer) analysis and a religious history approach the study focuses on the terms that relate to the visible temple (as a building) and the spiritualized temple. This shows a clearly recognizable development from classical temple theology, which counted on the presence of God in the earthly temple, to a gradual spiritualization of the presence of God in later psalms and layers. By reconstructing these transformation processes in Psalms 29, 48, 68, 74, 84 and 114, a brief history of temple theology in the Psalter can be described from the beginnings to the later period.
