Se define por su carácter asambleario, pancatalanista, ecologista, socialista y feminista; por estar a favor de la nacionalización de los bancos y en contra de la Unión Europea y de la OTAN, y está formada por varios movimientos sociales que provienen tanto de la lucha estudiantil como de la desobediencia civil. Una exdirigente catalana de Podemos dijo a principios de 2015 que «la estrategia de la CUP es más de hormiguita, mientras que la de Podemos es de tsunami». Este libro habla con algunos de sus protagonistas y explica cómo ha funcionado esta estrategia, cómo ha ensanchado una base social que parecía destinada a ser minoritaria y con qué contradicciones ha tenido que enfrentarse.
