Gramsci raccolse il concetto di rivoluzione passiva, con la mediazione di un libro di Guido De Ruggiero, dall'uso che ne aveva fatto Vincenzo Cuoco. L'espressione arrivò a indicare il carattere delle rivoluzioni borghesi: processi di modernizzazione operati "dall'alto", con una posizione "passiva" dei gruppi subalterni. Sul piano teorico, fu l'occasione per un confronto con gli scritti storici di Marx e con Max Weber.Tutte le categorie principali dei Quaderni del carcere passarono per il filtro di questa intuizione, che divenne il fulcro di un ripensamento del concetto moderno di rivoluzione. Ben presto, la riflessione sulle rivoluzioni passive si estese a una domanda sulla realtà degli anni Trenta del Novecento. Lo sguardo acuto del prigioniero riconobbe nel proprio tempo le ombre inquietanti di una "crisi organica globale", che avvicinava altre e più gravi catastrofi.
