Gradual apprenticeship for carpenters at the Smiling Gecko Carpentry in Cambodia
About this book
The demand for a proper vocational education and training (VET) in Cambodia is extremely high. Cambodia is still suffering from the terror regime of the Khmer Rouge where millions of people, especially well educated ones, were killed. This lead to a lack of knowledge in many economic sectors. The wood processing sector is one of them. The government does not offer any countrywide VET for carpenters. This book describes the design of a gradual apprenticeship for carpenters in Cambodia and how this training system was selected. In a first step, an analysis of the Cambodian education system and the economy with a focus on the wood sector provides the reader the needed background knowledge. The second step, a case study with four apprentices at the Smiling Gecko Carpentry shows the professional profile of the target group of prospective carpenters. The third and final step is the evaluation of the three different training systems: perennial, gradual or modular apprenticeship. Based on the results of the previous steps the curriculum is designed which includes the admission criteria, the tasks per grade and the theoretical and practical training units.
