Figlia di Teodosio I, Galla Placidia (368-450 d.C.) seguì a Ravenna il fratello Onorio, divenuto imperatore d'Occidente. Morto Alarico, che l'aveva presa in ostaggio, divenne la moglie di Ataulfo, il nuovo condottiero dei Visigoti. L'amore dello sposo le permise di essere elemento di avvicinamento tra barbari e romani. Assassinato Ataulfo, fu rimandata a Ravenna dove Onorio la dette in sposa al patrizio Costanzo. I due ebbero la dignità di augusti, cosa che permise al figlio Valentiniano III di succedere allo zio. Durante la minorità di Valentiniano, Galla resse il governo dell'Impero occidentale in un momento particolarmente delicato. Si dimostrò una donna forte di fronte alle avversità d'ogni genere che il destino le riservò.A partire dall'epoca tardoantica si sono affacciate alla ribalta della storia figure femminili di diversa estrazione che, per fortuna o abilità, hanno giocato un ruolo determinante. I cambiamenti della tarda antichità hanno portato la donna da una funzione fondamentale ma interna al gruppo o alla famiglia, a funzioni che oggi definiremmo pubbliche. È per questi motivi che possiamo considerare le vicende di Galla Placidia un'importante cartina di tornasole per leggere la storia di quel periodo.
