Uses: eczema, infections (mouth, skin, respiratory, and urinary tract), insomnia
Emotional attributes: reduces anxiety, compulsive behaviors, depression, and stress; sedative yet uplifting
Cautions: phototoxic (the bergaptene-free version is not phototoxic)
Comments: named for its origins in Bergamo, Italy
CEDARWOOD, ATLAS
Cedrus atlantica
Also called: African cedar, libanol
Actions: antifungal, antiputrescent, antiseborrheic, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, calmative, diuretic, expectorant, fungicidal, mucolytic, stimulant (circulatory system), tonic
Uses: acne, arthritis, bronchitis, cystitis, dandruff, dermatitis, eczemas, fungal infections, hair loss, leucorrhoea, oily skin, pruritus, respiratory ailments (ears, nose, and throat), rheumatism, skin eruptions, ulcers
Emotional attributes: fortifying & strengthening; reduces anxiety, stress, and tension
Cautions: avoid during pregnancy
Comments: generally agreed as the โ€œfirstโ€ essential oil by the ancient Egyptians and used as an antidote to poison, for embalming, and in perfumes
CHAMOMILE, GERMAN
Matricaria recutita
Also called: blue chamomile, matricaria, sweet false chamomile
Actions: analgesic, antiallergenic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, bactericidal, carminative, cholagogue, cicatrizant, digestive, emmenagogue, febrifuge, fungicidal, hepatic, nerve sedative, stimulant of leucocyte production, stomachic, sudorific, vermifuge, vulnerary
Uses: acne, allergies, arthritis, boils, burns, chilblains, colic, cuts, cystitis, dermatitis, dyspepsia, earaches, eczemas, hair care, headaches, indigestion, inflammations, insect bites & stings, insomnia, menopause, menstrual cramps, migraines, muscle aches & pains, nausea, neuralgia, rashes, rheumatism, sensitive skin, sprains, teething, toothaches, wounds
Emotional attributes: calming; reduces anxiety, depression, and stress
Cautions: pre-test for skin sensitivity
Comments: contains chamazulene, a potent anti-inflammatory which gives this oil its blue color
CHAMOMILE, ROMAN
Anthemis nobilis
Also called: English chamomile, sweet chamomile, true chamomile

Uses: acne, allergies, arthritis, boils, burns, chilblains, colic, cuts, dermatitis, dry skin, dyspepsia, earaches, eczemas, flatulence, hair care, headaches, indigestion, inflammations, insect bites & stings, insomnia, menstrual regulation and cramps, menopause, muscular pain, nausea, neuralgia, rashes, rheumatism, sensitive skin, sprains, teething, toothaches, wounds
Emotional attributes: soothing & calming; relieves anxiety, depression, and stress
Cautions: may cause drowsiness; can cause dermatitis in allergic individuals
Comments: medieval monks planted Roman chamomile in their gardens so invalids could lie on the plants to relieve their depression
CLARY SAGE
Salvia sclarea
Also called: muscatel sage, clary wort, clear eye

Uses: acne, asthma, boils, cramps, dandruff, high blood pressure, insomnia, labor pain, menopause, menstruation, migraines, muscle aches, throat infections, whooping cough, wrinkles
Emotional attributes: euphoric; balancing: effective for both relieving mental fatigue and calming the mind
Cautions: must be diluted; not for use as a single oil. Avoid during pregnancy. Do not use while drinking alcohol. Large amounts may cause headaches. May impair concentration and cause drowsiness. Not to be confused with garden sage, which is used in mouth cleaning products.
CYPRESS
Cupressus sempervirens
Also called: Italian cypress, Mediterranean cypress
Actions: antiperspirant, antirheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, calmative, deodorant, diuretic, hepatic, styptic, sudorific, tonic, vasoconstrictive
Uses: asthma, bronchitis, cellulitis, coughs, edemas, gums, hemorrhoids, mature skin, menopause, menorrhagia, menstruation, muscle & joint aches, oily & overhydrated skin, poor circulation, rheumatism, sweatiness, varicose veins, wounds
Emotional attributes: calmative & restorative; eases grief & life transitions
Comments: still used by the Tibetans in ritual incense. In China, the nuts are believed to aid the liver and respiratory system
EUCALYPTUS, BLUE GUM
Eucalyptus globulus
Also called: blue gum oil
