This ethnographic drama script is adapted from observations conducted in a large city centre library in the UK. The action focuses on the staff room in the library, where the fictionalised characters of four customer experience assistants, threatened with redundancy, take their lunch and tea breaks. The ethnographic drama is a creative curation of field notes, transcripts, audio recordings, video recordings, conversations and observations. It tells a story of political tension in everyday life at a time of austerity.

Act III
Scene 1
Angel, Abbi, Joe and Raj are on their break. They sit round a coffee-table.
JOEDid you put in for it?
ANGELI put in for both.
ABBIBoth?
RAJI thought you couldn’t.
ANGELWhat have I got to lose?
ABBITrue.
RAJI didn’t.
JOEYou didn’t?

ANGELGood for you, good for you.
JOEIt’s all been put on hold anyway.
ABBIWhat has?
JOEThe VR. The job interviews.
ABBIWhy has it?
ANGELSomething to do with the union negotiating with the city council.
JOEYou don’t know whether you’re coming or going.
ANGELApply for VR. Don’t apply for VR. Apply for your job. Don’t apply for your job. It’s chaos.
JOEIn the meantime, what are we supposed to do? Look for something else? Sit tight until they make up their minds?
RAJThey don’t care. We’re expendable. They’ll get rid of more than half of us one way or another. But I’m not going to beg.
JOEThat might be what they want. That might be part of a deliberate strategy. Create uncertainty, put doubt in our minds, and we start to leave of our own accord, start to drift away.
RAJI’m not playing their games, that’s all.
ANGELI’d like to go part time.
ABBIYou would?
ANGELI’ve always wanted to study.
ABBIWhat, for a degree?
