Il 12 settembre 1612, interpretando il decreto di Paolo V Sanctissimus Dominus Noster, la Monarchia Cattolica introdusse la pratica del giuramento di fedeltà all'Immacolata Concezione per tutti i ministri del sovrano, che fu poi esteso a università, municipalità, ordini cavallereschi e confraternite, in tutti i suoi domini. Questa decisione, indipendente dalla volontà della Chiesa di Roma, si tradusse in un intenso dibattito politico e alimentò controversie teologiche già esistenti riguardo alle posizioni immacoliste.La difesa della causa dell'Immacolata Concezione rientrò nel discorso politico della Monarchia Cattolica, tanto attraverso la pubblicistica come tramite la produzione artistica e letteraria, convertendosi, per i territori appartenenti alla Corona asburgica, in un elemento di promozione dell'unità, tale da esaltare fortemente la coesione tra di essi pur appartenendo a un sistema policentrico.
