Eine fortschreitende Fragmentierung der Kulturlandschaft in Mitteleuropa führte und führt zu einer zunehmenden Isolation der verbleibenden Lebensräume für heimische Tier- und Pflanzenarten. Ein reduzierter oder auch vollständig ausbleibender Genfluss zwischen Populationen fragmentierter Habitate begünstigt wiederum eine erhöhte Aussterbewahrscheinlichkeit, besonders von stenotopen bzw. stenöken sowie ausbreitungsschwachen Arten. Eine großräumige Vernetzung von Lebensräumen durch geeignete Ausbreitungswege oder "Korridore" ist somit eine entscheidende Voraussetzung für den langfristigen Erhalt und Schutz von Biodiversität.Doch besonders in Landschaften, in denen sich Offenland- und Waldlebensräume verzahnen, kommt es häufig zu Konflikten bei der "Biotopvernetzung", da Korridore, welche auf die Vernetzung eines bestimmten Lebensraumtyps zielen, häufigzugleich eine Fragmentierung des anderen Lebensraumtyps bewirken. Seit einiger Zeit werden "halb offene Lebensräume", welche ein Mosaik aus offenland- und gehölzgeprägten Strukturen besitzen, als Lösungsansatz für einen effektiveren Ausbreitungskorridor für Offenland- und Waldarten diskutiert.In dem vorliegenden Band zum Forschungs- und Entwicklungsvorhaben (F+E) "Ökologische Funktion von halboffenen Verbundkorridoren" wurden, mit Förderungdes Bundesamtes für Naturschutz, das Potenzial und die Perspektiven von halboffenen Lebensräumen als Ausbreitungskorridore untersucht und dokumentiert. DieErgebnisse zeigen, dass "halb offene Korridore" für Offenland- und Waldarten gleichermaßen als Korridor oder "stepping stone" dienen und somit wirksam zu einer Vernetzung verschiedener Lebensraumtypen in Kulturlandschaften beitragen können. Die Ergebnisse des Projektes wurden für den vorliegenden Band zudem im Hinblick auf ihre Anwendbarkeit und Umsetzung in der Naturschutzpraxis aufbereitet.
