1970 entstand im Bayerischen Wald der erste deutsche Nationalpark. Seitdem ist die Zahl der Nationalparks auf insgesamt 16 gestiegen. Schon diese Zahl lĂ€sst eine Erfolgsgeschichte vermuten. Auch wenn die meisten Nationalparks heute ĂŒber eine hohe Akzeptanz verfĂŒgen, so starten diese GroĂschutzgebiete doch vielfach unter Ă€uĂerst schwierigen Bedingungen.Ein interdisziplinĂ€res Wissenschaftsteam analysierte die Ausweisungsverfahren der Nationalparks im schleswig-holsteinischen und niedersĂ€chsischen Wattenmeer, im niedersĂ€chsischen Teil des Harzes und in der Eifel sowie den gescheiterten Versuch im Siebengebirge. Jenseits der klassischen Konflikte mit den konkurrierenden Landnutzern stand dabei im Mittelpunkt, wie sich die Ausweisungsbehörden und die Politik um Akzeptanz bei der wirtschaftlich nicht unmittelbar betroffenen Bevölkerung in der Region bemĂŒhten. Probleme ergaben sich bei der Kommunikation und bezĂŒglich der Erwartungshaltungen hinsichtlich Transparenz und Partizipation. Hierzu und zu den anderen Konfliktbereichen legt das Wissenschaftsteam Empfehlungen zu Akzeptanzsteigerung bei zukĂŒnftigen Ausweisungsverfahren vor.Einen besonderen Schub erfuhr der groĂflĂ€chige Gebietsschutz 1990 durch das Nationalprogramm der DDR. Ein gesonderter Beitrag wĂŒrdigt dieses Programm anlĂ€sslich des 25. Jahrestages seiner Verabschiedung.
