Hochwasser sind Ereignisse, die große Schäden verursachen können, in naturbelassenen Flussauen aber der Motor einer immer neu in Gang kommenden Entwicklung von Lebensräumen und biologischer Vielfalt sind. Die dynamischen Prozesse im Auenwald an der Donau zwischen Neuburg und Ingolstadt waren infolge des Staustufenbaus und oft jahrelang ausbleibender Hochwasser weitgehend zum Erliegen gekommen. Eine technisch aufwendige Ausleitung von Wasser in den Auenwald soll diesem Zustand abhelfen. Ob dies zum Erfolg geführt hat, wurde in einer mehrjährigen Forschungsarbeit untersucht, deren Ergebnisse im vorliegenden Band dargestellt werden. Erste positive Entwicklungen bei den Auenbiozönosen sind bereits zu beobachten. Aber es zeichnet sich auch ab, dass unter den heute gegebenen Randbedingungen wahrscheinlich nur ein Bruchteil der ursprünglichen Auendynamik wiederhergestellt werden kann. Infolgedessen muss man damit rechnen, dass stauregulierte Flussauen auch nach einer Renaturierung nur noch teilweise von charakteristischen Auenbiotopen geprägt sind, obwohl ihr naturschutzfachlicher Wert aus anderen Gründen durchaus bedeutend sein kann.
