Chapter 7

Documenting Models and Creating Families

Learning Objectives

After completing this chapter, you will be able to:
• Add permanent dimensions
• Convert temporary dimensions into permanent dimensions
• Modify a dimension and its parameters
• Add tags to project
• Add beam annotations to a project
• Understand family creations

In the previous chapters, you learned how to add structural grids, columns, framing members, and various other structural elements to a project. In this chapter, you will learn how to document a project and prepare it as a working drawing by using various tools and techniques in Revit. To document a model, you need to place dimensions to the structural plan view, add text notes and place tags to columns, beams, and structural elements wherever required. In this chapter, you will also learn about various dimensioning terms and tools, tools for placing text notes, and placing tags and beam annotations in your project.
Dimensioning
Dimensions play a crucial role in the presentation of a project. Although the structural model of a project can convey what the appearance or design of the model would be, yet to materialize it at the site, there must be information and statistics regarding each element involved in the model. Since the design of a project is used for the actual construction of the project, it is essential to describe each element of the project in terms of actual measurement parameters such as length, width, height, angle, radius, diameter, and so on. All these information can be added to a project by using dimensions. In most cases, information conveyed through dimensions is as important as the project view itself. The dimensions added in the project view ensure that the project drawings in the view are read and interpreted in an appropriate manner. Adding dimensions also help in avoiding the discrepancies that may creep in between the elements used for the generation of the building drawings. In a structural project, you can add dimensions based on the actual dimensions of the elements to be created. In other words, they are as truthful as the project elements themselves. The units used in the dimensions play an important role in describing the detailing that is required to complete a project. For example, the use of fractional inches in the dimensions indicates the amount of detailing required while generating a design. It also reflects the extent of detailing and the precision required to complete a project. Therefore, dimensions are used not only for specifying the sizes of elements, but also for instructing the persons involved in the project, such as cost estimato...
