Tónskáldið sem kemur fyrir hér er fætt og uppalið í Kaupmannahöfn. Niels W. Gade fæddist árið 1817, hann spilaði á fiðlu í konunglegu sinfóníuhljómsveit Danmerkur. Fyrsta sinfónía hans tryggði honum pláss í tónlistarháskóla í Leipzig. Á ferli sínum orti Gade fádæma mikið af verkum og var hann mjög skapandi í leiðum sínum. Eitt af hans uppátækjum var brúðkaupsgjöf hans til konu sinnar, en hann orti fimmtu sinfóníu sína henni til heiðurs.-

V IÐ hlið Hartmanns gamla var Gade merkastur fulltrúi hinnar rómantísku stefnu í danskri tónlist, og fyrstur varð hann danskra tónskálda til þess að vekja verulega athygli erlendis á danskri tónlist. Því að þó að hann dáði „Leipzigskólann“ (Mendelssohn, Schumann), og ótvírætt gæti áhrifa þaðan í tónsmíðum Gades, átti list hans rætur í danskri náttúru og danskri þjóðarlund. Og líklega er það einmitt merkast í fari hans sem tónlistarmanns, hvernig hann notaði hið þjóðlega ívaf í hinar stærri tónsmíðar sínar (t.d. í symfóníunum í c-moll, B-dur og h-moll, „Elverskud“ o. s. frv.), og að þessu leyti var hann brautryðjandi.
Hann hét fullu nafni Niels Wilhelm Gade og var fæddur í Kaupmannahöfn 22. febrúar 1817. Var faðir hans kominn af józku fólki, en hafði tekið sér bólfestu í Kaupmannahöfn og gerst hljóðfærasmiður. Stóð það til, að sonur hans lærði þessa list-iðn og ynn...
