Tónskáldið sem fjallað er um hér er stundum talið danskt en einnig talið vera þýskt. Rudolph Kuhlau var fæddur og uppalinn í Þýskalandi en hann flúði til Danmerkur árið 1810 til að komast undan herskyldu. List hans lék lykilhlutverki í dönsku gullöldinni og starfaði hann fyrir dönsku hirðina, mikið af hans tónlist er þ.a.l. tileinkuð dönsku konungsfjölskyldunni. Hann gerðist danskur ríkisborgari árið 1813. Hann gaf út um 200 verk, en hluti af óútgefna efni hans glataðist þegar heimili hans í Kaupmannahöfn brann.Serían fjallar um helstu tónsnillinga allt frá árunum 1525-1907. Hún er byggð á skrifum Theodórs Árnasonar sem var íslenskur tónlistarmaður. Fjallað er um líf tónskálda og verk þeirra. Bókin kom fyrst út árið 1966.

H ANN hét fullu nafni Daniel Friedrich Rudolph Kuhlau, var fæddur og uppalinn í Þýzkalandi og af þýzku fólki kominn, en Danir vilja þó telja hann danskt tónskáld, því að í Danmörku þroskaðist skáldgáfa hans, og ýmsar tónsmíðar hans eru svo danskar í húð og hár, sem væri þær eftir aldanskan mann, — t. d. forleikurinn að „Elverhöj“ Heibergs, og yfirleitt tónsmíðarnar í þeim leik. Danir telja sér hann lika óhikað.
Kuhlau var sonur flautuleikara í hermanna-hljómsveit, og var fæddur 1786 í Uelzen í Hannóver. Snemma þótti á því bera, að hann myndi vera hneigður fyrir tónlist og veitti faðir hans honum ungum tilsögn í flautu-leik og fékk til ágætan kennara, Ahrenbostel organleikara, að kenna honum á píanó. Um aldamótin (1800) fluttu foreldrar hans til Hamborgar, og þar fékk Kuhlan sérlega góðan kennara i hinni æðri tónfræði og komposition. Hét sá Schwenke,...
