Gaetano Donizetti fæddist árið 1797 í Bergamo á Italíu. Á sínum ferli sem tónskáld samdi hann um 70 óperur. Fyrstu óperuna samdi hann 19 ára gamall þegar hann stundaði nám við háskólann í Bologna. Serían fjallar um helstu tónsnillinga allt frá árunum 1525-1907. Hún er byggð á skrifum Theodórs Árnasonar sem var íslenskur tónlistarmaður. Fjallað er um líf tónskálda og verk þeirra. Bókin kom fyrst út árið 1966.

D onizetti var fæddur í Bergamo á Ítalíu, 25. nóvember 1797, — eða tæpum sex árum síðar en tónskáldið Rossini..Hugur hans hneigðist snemma til tónlistariðkana, en til þess mun hafa verið ætlast, að hann yrði lögfræðingur. En tónlistin átti svo mikil ítök í honum, að hann vildi heizt ekki öðru sinna og varð ósáttur við föður sinn út af þessu. Tók hann þá þann kost, að strjúka að heiman og til Feneyja. En skömm mun þó hafa verið dvöl hans þar, því að skömmu síðar er hann kominn til Neapel og stundar þar nám um hríð á tónlistarskóla. Og 1818 fær hann tekinn til leiks i Feneyjum fyrsta söngleik sinn, Enrico de Borgogna, sem var strax vel tekið og ári síðar birtist...
