Ohne Parteibuch wird er 1973 Pressesprecher des legendären Bruno Kreisky, mit dem er die Wahlkämpfe 1975 und 1979 bestreitet, dessen Konflikt mit Hannes Androsch und die nahostpolitischen Aktivitäten er miterlebt. 1986 wird er Fernseh-Informationsintendant. Johannes Kunz berichtet über seine Zusammenarbeit mit Gerd Bacher, Teddy Podgorski, Wolf In der Maur und Ernst Wolfgang Marboe und erzählt offen von den Ränkespielen und parteipolitischen Intrigen, deren Zeuge er war. Für den Verleger Fritz Molden schmuggelt er eine TitoBiografie aus dem kommunistischen Jugoslawien; als Konzertveranstalter arbeitet Kunz mit Größen des Showbusiness und macht den Salzburger Jazz-Herbst zu einem Festival von europäischem Format. Seine Erinnerungen sind gelebte Zeitgeschichte und berichten von persönlichen Begegnungen mit Politikern, Showgrößen und Weltstars in Anekdoten, Fotodokumenten und Karikaturen.
