Qu'est-ce que le jeu? Dans l'espèce humaine, on connaît les enfants, les athlètes, les acteurs, les accros de la roulette, les casse-cou... Pour chacun, on peut expliquer, nuancer, comprendre ce qu'est « leur » jeu. Mais pourquoi dit-on aussi de certains animaux qu'ils jouent? Le rat joue-t-il vraiment lorsqu'il se mord la queue? Les macaques lorsqu'ils s'éclaboussent dans les flaques? Et s'il devient constant que des animaux jouent, quel rapport existe-t-il entre le jeu de l'homme et celui de l'animal?Professeur de physiologie, Claude Bensch est éthologue et dirige le laboratoire d'exploration fonctionnelle du système nerveux central au Centre hospitalo-universitaire de Bordeaux.

Éléments bibliographiques

Ces réflexions concernant les activités ludiques des mammifères ont été alimentées par les travaux expérimentaux effectués sur les rats de laboratoire et sont donc essentiellement basées sur la compilation d’informations glanées dans un grand nombre de publications spécialisées.

Pour éviter de dérouler ici plusieurs pages de références nous proposons, en A, une très courte liste de classiques fondamentaux sur le sujet, puis, en B, le relevé des travaux que nous avons pu consulter en supplément de ceux déjà cités dans l’importante bibliographie présentée dans l’excellent ouvrage de R. Fagen (1981).

Néanmoins, lorsqu’il a été utile de citer plus précisément dans ce texte des travaux déjà mentionnés dans Fagen, nous en avons repris la référence dans cette bibliographie.
