Questo libro ricostruisce la fitta trama di trasformazioni che investirono la storia politica internazionale e l'ordine mondiale nei 150 anni compresi fra il 1770 e la fine della prima guerra mondiale, l'epoca che l'autore con efficace formula definisce «il lungo Ottocento». Al centro della narrazione, scandita in quattro stadi di crescente interconnessione globale, e che evita di considerare ancora una volta la storia del mondo come mera storia di civiltà, sono da un lato gli imperi dell'epoca in quanto complesse entità impegnate nella lotta per il consolidamento e la sopravvivenza, e dall'altro le componenti culturali, razziali e religiose delle diverse regioni geopolitiche del pianeta. Lo sguardo volutamente multiplo dell'autore tiene conto non solo della scansione temporale caratteristica di ciascuna regione (Occidente, Asia, Africa, mondo musulmano), riconoscendo l'apporto di ciascuna all'immenso processo di globalizzazione, ma anche dei collegamenti fra imperi, fra regioni e delle tendenze che coinvolgono ogni specifica area, in un concorso di forze spesso asimmetrico o squilibrato nel quale il ruolo dell'Europa, pur se importante, emerge come quello di una regione fra le altre. Ne risulta un percorso di lettura estremamente originale, capace di rendere conto dei contrasti e delle reciproche influenze delle diverse aree mondiali coinvolte in un unico, immane processo di modernizzazione.
