La Serranía Celtibérica es un territorio que se extiende por las zonas montañosas de las comunidades autónomas de Aragón, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Comunitat Valenciana y La Rioja. Ocupa el 13% del territorio de España, pero solo cuenta con el 1% de sus habitantes. Su densidad de población apenas alcanza 8 hab/km2. Esta situación extrema es la que ha motivado que sea conocida como la zona cero de la despoblación. En 2015 se constituyó la Red de las diez universidades que cuentan con campus en la Serranía Celtibérica –Zaragoza, Valladolid, Jaume I, Burgos, València, Castilla-La Mancha, Alcalá, Nacional de Educación a Distancia, Politècnica de València y La Rioja– con el objetivo de fomentar el desarrollo social, económico y cultural de este territorio a través de la investigación, la formación y la transferencia de conocimiento. Precisamente, esta obra recoge algunas de las ponencias que se defendieron en el I Congreso de la Red de Universidades de la Serranía Celtibérica, celebrado en València, los días 19 y 20 de noviembre de 2021. El objetivo de este libro es aportar propuestas razonadas y razonables a la activación de la Serranía y de sus recursos. Tras estudiar el diagnóstico de la situación y las posibles estrategias a seguir de cara al futuro, se abordan aspectos de la economía, el medio ambiente, la cohesión social, la cultura y la política de este territorio. Un libro, pues, para conocer y saber, pero también para contribuir al diseño de las más innovadoras y mejores soluciones en aras de un futuro sostenible para la Serranía Celtibérica y, también, el conjunto de los territorios que sufren la despoblación.
