A woman is found dead in a crowded compartment of the London tube, with no witness and no obvious hand behind it – a riddle for the Old Man in the Corner, who never leaves his teashop table.
From Baroness Emmuska Orczy, the celebrated creator of The Scarlet Pimpernel, comes a cornerstone tale of the armchair-detective tradition. Seated in an ABC teashop and toying with a length of string, her nameless sleuth solves the most baffling cases purely from newspaper reports and the account of the young journalist Polly Burton. First collected in The Old Man in the Corner in the early 1900s, this is Edwardian crime-writing of wonderful economy and cunning.
