About This Book

Not a guide nor just a book of photographs, but the intimate memoir of the city, this book guides the readers into a lovely stroll through narrow streets, bridges, alleys and squares looking for hidden beauties and unexpected corners. The author of the book, a true Venetian and a lover of his own city, discovered and experienced these places during his numerous wanderings, snooping through the narrow streets, peering through doors and courtyards, making small, but always polite, transgressions and managing to capture with his camera the colourful and sometimes decadent soul and the timeless charm that have always characterized a Venice with many places yet to discover.

DORSODURO E LA GIUDECCA
Known in the past as scopulo (“cliff”) due to the particular height and solidity of the land, the sestiere of Dorsoduro takes its present name from the characteristically sturdy terrain (“hard back”) of the zone, less swampy than elsewhere in the city. It has an area of 93 hectares. Near the lower address numbers stands Punta della Dogana da Mar, the customs zone with large warehouses for goods, the monumental observatory and the Basilica della Salute. Following the numbers in ascending order, one reaches the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Gallerie dell'Accademia and the Squero di San Trovaso, a boatyard that is one of the last remaining sites where gondolas are built and repaired, as well as the Scuola Grande dei Carmini, one of the major sodality institutions operating during the Serenissima Repubblica. Dorsoduro also contains the new barracks of the fire department, opened in 1938.
Direct access to the city center on foot is provided by the Ponte de l’Accademia, first built in iron in 1854 and later rebuilt in wood and reopened in 1933. Since 1171 the Dorsoduro district has included the island of Giudecca, which was considered an independent zone of Venice only during the period of French and Austrian rule in the 19th century. The island now has about 4700 inhabita...
