A keepsake miscellany for the dog-minded, set among vintage photographs of the smart little dog they called the American Gentleman.
The Vintage Dog Scrapbook gathers essays, anecdotes, poems and literary excerpts on the business of living with a dog - the loyalty, the comedy, the small daily devotions - and prints them among photographs of the Boston drawn from rare breed volumes in our library. The text belongs to dogs at large; the pictures belong to the breed.
The first dog developed in the United States, descended from a bull-and-terrier cross bought in Boston around 1870 and recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1893, it wears its evening dress in every photograph here.
