Here are the head and body points as the judges of the day read them, the rearing and feeding of youngsters, the ailments a novice owner could expect, and a full account of the foundation strains behind the dogs then winning - the line that runs back to a single bull-and-terrier cross bought in Boston around 1870, and forward to the American Kennel Club's recognition of the first dog breed developed in the United States.
