The Dandie Dinmont Terrier - A Complete Anthology of the Dog -

About this book

The only breed in the world named after a character in a novel - and the period writers here are still quarrelling about where it came from.

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier - A Complete Anthology of the Dog collects chapters from the rare kennel literature of 1897 to 1935, including H. W. Huntington's My Dog and I (1897) and The Show Dog (1901) and Walter Hutchinson's Hutchinson's Dog Encyclopaedia (1935). Among them is the long-running argument over a dachshund cross, with Stonehenge putting the case and E. Bradshaw Smith answering him in the pages of The Field.

The breed takes its name from the farmer in Walter Scott's Guy Mannering, whose terriers were all called Pepper or Mustard - still the two colours of the standard. Here are its points, its pepper-and-mustard coats, the Davidson and Bradshaw Smith kennels, and the champions of the day, with the original photographs reproduced throughout.

This edition features:

  • Chapters from the rare kennel literature of 1897 to 1935, by the authorities of their day
  • The origin controversy argued out in full, including the correspondence in The Field
  • Points, colours and temperament, with the kennel histories and celebrated winners
  • The original photographs of the leading dogs of the era, reproduced throughout
