The text is for dogs everywhere; the pictures are the breed's.
The breed began, improbably, with the Nottingham lace-makers who bred a toy bulldog for company, and travelled to France with them when the mills mechanised. In Paris it became the pet of artists, writers and society women - the dog you see in these photographs.
