Bred in the imperial palaces and carried in the sleeves of court robes, the breed reached Britain when five dogs were taken from the Summer Palace in 1860 and the smallest was presented to Queen Victoria. Within two generations it was the most fiercely contested toy breed in the ring. These chapters give the points, the coat, the temperament, the celebrated winners and their pedigrees, with the original photographs reproduced throughout.
