Catherine Hezser zeigt, dass sich die jĂŒdische und christliche Kunst der SpĂ€tantike in kontinuierlichem Austausch mit und Bezugnahme auf die kĂŒnstlerischen Ausdrucksweisen und theologischen Ansichten der jeweils anderen religiösen Gemeinschaft befand. In römisch-byzantinischer Zeit entwickelte sich im Judentum und Christentum eine Kunst, die im Gegensatz zum biblischen Bilderverbot figĂŒrliche Darstellungen verwendete und bestimmte, in der griechisch-römischen Umwelt gelĂ€ufige, mythologische Motive aufnahm. Diese neue jĂŒdische und christliche Ikonographie wird vergleichend im Kontext der griechisch-römischen und frĂŒh-byzantinischen Geschichte und Kultur untersucht. Dabei sind den exegetischen, mythologischen und identitĂ€tsstiftenden Darstellungen jeweils eigene Kapitel gewidmet. Der Vergleich weist auf interessante ZusammenhĂ€nge und Unterschiede in der bildlichen Ausgestaltung, Symbolik und theologischen Bedeutung hin. In beiden Religionen diente die Kunst der StĂ€rkung von GruppenidentitĂ€t in Auseinandersetzung mit dem gemeinsamen biblischen Erbe im Kontext hellenistischer und römischer Traditionen.
