Taking Stock

The humanities in Australian life since 1968

About this book

Taking Stock forms part of an exploration by the Australian Academy of Humanities into the role the humanities have played in Australian life over the last forty years. The papers in this volume were originally presented in November 2009 at the annual Symposium of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, convened by Mark Finnane and held at the National Library of Australia, Canberra. The Academy, with the help of its Fellows and other scholars, reviewed some of the larger shifts and developments which have occurred in the humanities in Australia over the past four decades. Panellists and respondents were invited to address a number of fundamental questions: How have research agendas in the humanities altered in Australia since the late 1960s, and how have earlier concepts of disciplinary enquiry been modified or transformed? Are national frameworks any longer adequate for understanding social and cultural life and experience?
