About this book

Questa serie di cataloghi di incunaboli, dopo Sicilia (Siracusa, Catania e Ragusa), Emilia-Romagna (Cesena) e Sardegna (Cagliari), affronta per la prima volta un paese estero molto familiare, la Repubblica di San Marino con le sue due sedi di conservazione, la Biblioteca di Stato e la Biblioteca Universitaria.Il numero degli esemplari è molto ridotto: 31 in tutto (per complessivi 28 volumi), 19 per la prima sede e 12 per la seconda. Quelli della Biblioteca di Stato, fondata nel 1839, vi sono arrivati attraverso le consuete vie usate per costituire raccolte in età moderna, vale a dire lasciti, acquisti e donazioni, peraltro in questo caso non facilmente identificabili. Molto diverso è il fondo della Biblioteca Universitaria, costituito da una raccolta di libri antichi, tra cui un manoscritto del secolo XV, uniti dal tema della memoria, o meglio della mnemotecnica. Su impulso di Umberto Eco, allora docente nell'ateneo sammarinese, questi esemplari furono acquistati nel 1991, dopo una lunga e difficile trattativa con il precedente proprietario, il collezionista Morris Young di New York.
