Der Papageientaucher mit seinem großen Schnabel und den knallorangenen Füßen ist ein werbewirksames Tier, eine Art farbenfroher Pinguin, nicht so groß, dass er seine Niedlichkeit verlieren würde, und nicht zu klein, sodass man ihn auf den vielen Vogelfelsen Islands sehr gut erkennen kann. Die größte Population des mittlerweile als gefährdet eingestuften Vogels, der zwar einem Pinguin ähnelt, aber seine Fähigkeit zu fliegen nicht verloren hat, findet sich in den Sommermonaten auf Island. In den steilen Klippen und Felsen der Insel lassen sich in diesem Zeitraum mehrere Millionen Papageientaucherpaare zum Brüten nieder. In den Wintermonaten ziehen die Vögel dann wieder hinaus auf das offene Meer, aber im Sommer leuchtet der rote Schnabel des Tieres zwischen den gras- und moosbewachsenen Felsen der isländischen Küste, ein ausgesprochen fotogener Farbkontrast. Vermutlich ist der Papageientaucher deswegen auf so vielen Tourismusprodukten des Landes zu finden, von Postkarten über Kühlschrankmagnete bis hin zu T-Shirts.
Wegen dieser Popularität heißen die vielen Touristengeschäfte, in denen überwiegend für Reisende interessante Produkte verkauft werden, darunter vor allem Souvenirs und lokales Design, auf Island auch »Lundabúðir« – Papageientauchergeschäfte.
