The Descent of Man
About this book
The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex is a book by Englishnaturalist Charles Darwin, first published in 1871, which appliesevolutionarytheory tohuman evolution, and details his theory ofsexual selection, a form of biological adaptation distinct from, yet interconnected with, natural selection. The book discusses many related issues, includingevolutionary psychology, evolutionary ethics, evolutionary musicology, differences between humanraces, differences between sexes, the dominant role of women inmate choice, and the relevance of theevolutionary theoryto society. Charles Robert Darwin (February 1809– 19 April 1882) was an Englishnaturalist, geologistandbiologist, best known for his contributions toevolutionary biology. His proposition that all species of life have descended fromcommon ancestorsis now widely accepted and considered a fundamental concept in science. In a joint publication withAlfred Russel Wallace, he introduced his scientific theory that thisbranching patternofevolutionresulted from a process that he callednatural selection, in which thestruggle for existencehas a similar effect to the artificial selection involved inselective breeding. Darwin has been described as one of the most influential figures inhuman history, and he was honoured byburial in Westminster Abbey.
